Why do we still have Daylight Savings time?

Former president Bush made DST longer by extending the number of days we observe DST, but why didn't he just make us stay on DST all year around? We would have more daylight hours after work. DST was originally for Farmers, but we are not an agricultural society any more...and Farmers can get up any time they want.
