Used transmission or used car?

how dependable are most used transmissions? if i cant get a new transmission, would it be better to buy a used car (cheap like $1000 or under ) or a used transmission which in your opinion would be more likely to last? the rest of my vehicle is in pretty good shape just had motor rebuilt not too long when the transmission went.
