What is an "understated tie"?

A plain one, that blends in with your shirt without "blending in" - you're wearing a white shirt, so go for a pale green, grey or pink tie. Lavender shirt - white tie. Yellow shirt - ehhh, just don't wear one (I've seen my dad wearing them too much). Just look for something minimalist.
