What does adjustable anticipation (heat) actually do?

I have a white-rodgers 1F80-0471 thermostat. I am trying to figure out what the adjustable anticipation actually does? Is it a type of sensitivity? So that the temperature falls the selected temperature before the heating starts again? If anyone known how to change the sensitivity let me know?
